Student Research Papers Statistics on Sexual Assault

As with most community organizations, SAN receives limited funding and is therefore, not in a position to undertake major research projects on its own. We have been fortunate to take part in two student research initiatives, the The Pro Bono Students Canada Program and the Community Based Research Network of Ottawa (CBRNO).

The Pro Bono Students Canada is a national program that matches law students with community agencies who require legal services, but are not able to "compensate legal counsel." This year, the Pro Bono Students Canada Program conducted two different research projects for us. The students examined the following issues:

  • Sexual assault and the legal context. This report looked at conviction rates of sexual assault offenders, both nationally and locally, and examined if these conviction rates varied depending on whether the assault was committed on a child or an adult. • CBRNO works to "increase the capacity of social service and social policy agencies … to carry out and use practical research and evaluation of high quality, enabling them to more effectively fulfill their respective mandates." This year, we had two Master's students from the Carleton School of Social Work examining the topic: "Culturally competent Practice with Diverse Women Survivors of Sexual Violence."
